It seems like the “correction” in contract values has affected big-time stars and no one else. Notice guys like Pedro and Schilling are worth $12m a year now instead of the 16 or 17 million they would have gotten five years ago.
Also, Beltran demanded $20 million a year and everyone sort of laughed. But then they go give $10 million to a guy like Varitek and this seems reasonable.
It just really gets to me when we are looking for a number 2 or 3 starter like Matt Clement and we can’t get him unless we start approaching 10 million a year. He might not even be a number 2, ya know?
Baseball is structured crazy, but that is what makes it so compelling. Nothing makes for better drama than David VS Goliath. I used to hate the structure of the game, now I see it as an added incentive for people to make smart monetary and personel moves. Thus adding another layer of complexity to an already great game.
The Mets overpaid for both Benson & Pedro. I doubt they’ll make any noise in the NL this year. Especially because Atlanta has just reloaded, The Cardinals are tougher now with D Eckstein. And if the Stro’s can talk Rocket into staying and pony up for Beltran they will be good again. The Mets spend money and make moves just to get some pub.
I am a Troy Glaus fan. He is a “Moneyball” theorists dream. Did the Dbacks overpay for him…maybe? But what they needed last year was run support, and Glaus has a high OBA, 37 points above League Average, and his SLG percentage is 200 points above league average. I don’t think that is a bad move, he will create less outs and therefore help the DBacks score more runs.
Millwood is what the Tribe needs. He had an off year last year because of elbow tendinitis, but he still was 9-6 with a 4.85 ERA. Because of a sub par year we can get him below market value. He started the season great but elbow problems were what hurt him after the all star break. He will undergo a physical and if he passes 7 Million for 10-12 more wins doesn’t sound that unreasonable. Mix in less blown saves with a good set up man in Arthur Rhodes and a healthy Bob Wickman and youv’e got the makings of a contender in the AL Central.
How bout $30 dollars if the MLB’s salary cap was $30 bucks, no great athlete would want to play baseball so that would open the door for fat bar league softball players like me!

there should be no salary cap in baseball. lets stick with it the way it is, and watch and laugh as New York continues to try to buy a championship. They may have won it all 27 times or so, but lately I think its being proven that just a mildly gigantic payroll and some heart can win it all. [ahemredsoxahem] all a salary cap would do is ensure that each team could only afford 1-2 superstars, and unlike football where any average role player can become a superstar with a little luck and some good speed, baseball takes a knack. if you’ve got the knack, you’re making $8-20 million a year. with those kinds of salaries floating around for every Beltran, Martinez, and Rodriguez out there, no team could afford to have more than an ace pitcher and a superstar fielder. Don’t mess with tradition, bitches.
If the salary cap is not so ridiculosly low that bar league superstars begin to play, I am with Kiddicus. There is nothing better than watching large market teams with salaries larger than the GNP of Guam lose and not make the playoffs.
The Yankee’s are like every WWE “Heel” that everyone loves to hate. The Yankee’s are like the Iron Shiek, Sgt. Slaughter (when he was friends with Sadam) and Hollywood Hogan (when he dyed his goatee black) all rolled into one big pin striped asshole, we all hate! Isn’t hate and spite what makes sports so great?
There should also be a minimum team salary of about $50 million, and the league should seize any team that claims they can’t pay $50 million to its players. They are either purposefully fielding a bad team knowing that some people are going to show up anyway, or they are too stupid to live.

And don’t get me started on Jaret Wright.

Troy Glaus is a good moneyball guy if he is on the field. That was my only point that he has some health issues. I like Glaus as a player.
Also, is Glaus a candidate for having been one of the guys on the juice? He got huge in a hurry, like Jim Thome.
I dont know if he is a BALCO boy, but he did “bulk up” pretty quick.
Just as a point of curiosity, what should the MLB salary cap be?
No idea, but it should be a range from so that some teams can’t go below the salary minimum.

The MLB salary cap should be about $80 million.
