Republicans Enter Race?
August 25, 2004 · Filed Under Uncategorized
No sooner did I feel like the Republicans weren’t even going to try in this election, they had Dick Cheney fire a shot directly to people like Andrew Sullivan. Cheney came out (pun intended) at a rally and said that he opposes the gay marriage constitutional amendment that the President supported.
Will it be enough to get the few republican voters who are gay? Will it be enough to sway some socially liberal Republicans who didn’t like the whole amendment thing? Is this all just way too late a reaction to something as hateful as that proposed amendment?
Regardless, I think it says one thing. The Republicans are finally strategizing.

Kind of a weak strategic move, if you ask me. (And you didn’t.) I mean, it’s a reasonable viewpoint for Cheney to have, what with his daughter and all, but Bush has done everything but staple a copy of the gay marriage ban to his forehead. Not sure how the support of a guy with no authority will attract more voters, except maybe if they have painfully short memories.
Call me crazy, but I think it’s also a little hypocritical in the way the GOP agenda seems to often be. It’s very self-interested. Low taxes for rich folks because we’re rich. It’s all right to shit on people’s rights unless one of those people is in your immediate family, in which case you’re allowed to disagree with the president. And this is the same campaign that called John McCain a babykiller when he said that he wouldn’t stop his fifteen-year-old daughter from getting an abortion if she were raped.
I think we may have passed the point where I can take at face value anything the Bush admin has to say. In case you’re wondering, I think the breaking point was the whole “Iraq supports Al Qaida” thing.
Well, I didn’t for a minute think it was going to sway you in any way. My point is that their version of “running an election” so far has been not really saying anything. This actually looks like some strategy to me.
By the way, what are the chances that this question was planted in the audience for mister cheney? I am betting pretty high.
I tried to put myself in the mindset of the undecided voter to see if this would make me look at voting for Bush. I don’t know if it would, because I have a hard time putting myself in the mindset of the undecided voter.
It occurs to me that the Bush strategy for reelection seems to be very similar to the Bush strategy for running America. Do whatever you want, don’t say a lot, and just assume that people will agree with you.
it’s strategery. just ask Bush. strategerizing.
opinion del me - the republicans are using a last-ditch effort to try to snag both sides of the gay marriage issue. Bush on one side, Cheney on the other (no pun intended). This way all straight, gay, bi, and undecided GOPs don’t feel like they’re selling out their beliefs to remain true to their party. sneaky.
I think Cheney would make a better President anyway. I’d vote him over W everytime.
If it was strategery on the Repub’s part, its far too little and too late. Besides, I think the far right wing of the Repub’s have taken way too much control of the agenda with stupid positions on Abortion, Stem Cell Research, and Gay marriage. I lean right normally, but if the Dem’s had come up with a decent candidate they could have had my vote (as my relatives roll in their graves).
