The-a-a-a Yankees Lose
March 30, 2004 · Filed Under Uncategorized
It’s all over folks. Game 1 is a precursor of things to come. Devil Rays win 8-3. The Yankees are only going to win 47 games. I know Red Sox nation is collectively pumping their fists. They don’t even care if the Red Sox play as long as the Yanks add to their loss column. I still hate both teams, but until Pedro gets back into action being an arrogant dick, I will choose to hate the Yankees more.

Sox are tied for second, right now. Woot!
Is this the first time the Devil Rays have ever had first place all to themselves? Where are the stats mutants to answer this for me?
The Devil Rays’ magic number is 161.
I still don’t understand your irrational hatred of the Red Sox, and I’ve given up trying to understand. I think I may have come up with a countermeasure, though.
Cry as you all might, the Indians actually had more success than the Red Sox over the last ninety or so years. And somehow the Red Sox are in the Yankee category of Heavy Favorites Who Must Be Toppled. Doesn’t make any sense. It’s totally irrational So, this season, I am going to develop an irrational hatred of the Indians.
I will root hard for Indian failure at every turn. And since they’re almost certainly going to be bad anyway, I will root for catastrophic, embarassing failure. I hope promising young players suffer career-ending injuries. I hope someone throws a no-hitter and no one is there to see it. I hope a typhoon hits the stadium.
Well, maybe not the typhoon, but hoping for all of those things to happen is about as reasonable as saying a team that hasn’t won since before the League of Nations was formed has an unfair advantage.
Well, shouldn’t you be rooting for the next Manny Ramirez to come out of Cleveland so you can buy them without doing any of the development?
Yeah, because of all those free agents the Red Sox snatched away from their lovable underdog opponents. Like Manny Ramirez. And…. Manny Ramirez. And there was that one time they signed Manny Ramirez.
Your “development” argument sucks, man. Manny was a blue-chip prospect his entire life. He spent an hour and a half in the minors. It’s not like the Indians broke the bank teaching the kid how to hit. He was with the big-league club at 21. All they developed was a serious hard-on for his swing, which he used to bring them to two World Series. I think they more than got their money’s worth for all the “development” they did.
And by that rationale, does no one in Arizona get to bitch about Curt Schilling, since was originally a Red Sox draftee? I mean, come on.
In the end, like every worker everywhere, Manny can sell his services to the highest bidder. Welcome to the free market, Comrade.
And you wonder why I consider you a member of the evil empire? Just throw your money around big money market. You may not have won, but you have fat cash. That is why I hate the Red Sox. You have, and we have not. We had for a small window when we couldn’t stop selling out that park, but in a market like Cleveland that is an anomaly. It is independent of team love (which we have plenty,) and is a function of population.
By the way, we had to suck really badly FOR A VERY LONG TIME (While you were playing in the 86 series) in order to be in a position to draft Manny Ramirez, in the first round of 1991, ok? That is part of the cost.
Finally, you can say that you only ever got Manny and that is true, but only because you missed out on Mike Mussina, and Bernie Williams to the Yankees. Trying to buy your team and failing is just as bad and just as indicative of the big market philosophy as succeeding in purchasing your team.
If I were any good at Photoshop, I would doctor up a picture of Manny in an Imperial Officer’s uniform from Star Wars. Because calling the Red Sox the evil empire is funny. (Calling the Yankees the evil empire is funny also, but that’s another story)
So every team that’s ever tried to sign a free agent is evil? Again, the Indians *tried* to keep Manny, offering him an insane amount of money that the Red Sox only were able to beat by a few million. Aren’t they at fault here, too? By trying to re-sign him to that contract, they helped create the baseball economy in which only a few teams can afford the top stars. Right? (This makes as much sense as saying the Red Sox are crazy because they tried to sign Mussina and Williams).
Fact is, Manny is the only example of a guy “stolen” from another team not only on the current Red Sox but during my lifetime. And really during the team’s history, since my lifetime is the lifetime of free agency. Compare that to the Yankees, who have made it a way of life. Yes, definitely the same. Perfectly reasonable to group them together.
I’m all for a salary cap. It won’t solve any of baseball’s problems, but at least it’ll take this particular sad, sad song out of the catalogue of everyone who follows a bad, under-supported, mismanaged team like the Indians.
Mismanaged? How so?
I like football!
hahaha. One of the poll questions on ESPN.com asked which NFL rule change you most strongly support. One choice was “Bill Belichick to always be called ‘Genius Bill Belichick.’” I voted for that one.
I would call four consecutive seasons of sell-outs followed by what essentially amounted to a cry of poverty and a firesale poor management. The Red Sox were poorly managed through much of the early 1990s. So it’s not unique to the Indians or anything.
