Covers Project

This site is a collection of artists and the songs they have covered by other artists. Then the site cross-references all these things. They are taking submissions and are compiling a pretty comprehensive list of all the things that different bands have covered. It is a pretty cool place to stop and browse. Kind of like a musical version of the Kevin Bacon game. I challenge anyone to find a band who has done more covers than Pearl Jam.

I was listening to the radio the other day (yes, it’s true!) and my ears almost fell off my head when I heard Limp Bizkit’s cover of The Who’s classic “Behind Blue Eyes.” They almost had me for a minute, as it started with acoustic guitar and Fred was actually singing, although not with his own little nuances, pretty much note for note. So I continue to listen, waiting for them to explode in the rocking finale, only it never happened. Instead there was this bizarre little interlude of electronica capped off with a SPEAK AND SPELL (?@$?#!) in the back ground? This is where they completely lost me. What the hell was that all about??? Now, we knew that Speak and Spell’s were great learning tools and could be used to help extra terrestrials contact their loved ones, but as an instrument?? Must have been Fred’s idea, because no one else could be so stupid as to think that sampling a Speak and Spell would be a cool idea. Keith Moon is rolling in his grave.
1) Check Phish or the Dead. I didn’t bother to count, but it looks like both have more covers than Pearl Jam.
2) Kraftwerk and Orchestral Manoeuvres used the Speak n’ Spell 20-plus years ago on a bunch of songs. F. Durst has never had an original idea in his life. Even the lousy ones.
Beep!
Way to go Chris. Phish and the Dead probably dwarf Pearl Jam.
As far as the speak n spell thing, it was an expensive sampler that just sounded like a speak n spell. The irony. But, it was that DJ that the Bizkit took from House of Pain who came up with the idea. I saw it on some documentary about the making of the album on MTV. I can’t help myself but watch Fred Durst. He is retarded, but for some reason I want to see what kind of bullshit he is going to say.
Ok, I am going to admit it. I don’t know why, but I like that song. The cover of Behind Blue Eyes is kind of good. I am going to admit it because I am sure if I didn’t Mike would have called me out on it. Trust me, I hate myself for it.
I would have probably liked it too if they played it right. How can you just omit a major part of the song and just insert a bunch of crap in it’s place? That would be like playing Stairway to Heaven and just skipping over the “as we wind on down the road” part and going straight to the end.
I think this website needs to be edited a tad better. It lists Pearl Jam as covering “Daughter” as well as a song actually called “Pearl Jam”.
I mean, I know that is a lot of information to sift through, but these are pretty obvious mistakes.
Kraftwerk is playing some show in Boston soon. April sometime, I think.
