Canadian Rock From YouTube – The Tea Part and Chore

I was pushing around YouTube last night and I got on a jag of Canadian rock when it occurred to me that I hadn’t listened to The Tea Party in a long time, while a couple of their albums were favorites of mine for a long time. I started looking for my favorite song by them called Psychopomp. People here in the US never became all that turned on to this song, but you will see by the reactions of Canadian audiences how big the song was.

Then I found out that the band broke up and the lead singer is still out on his own doing solo stuff. Check out the solo version of Psychopomp.

And after watching these two videos, I remembered how much I loved the band Chore, also from Canada. They never hit it huge in the States either, but they have some really amazing songs. Here are two of them, General Warning, and The Hitchhiker.

Sneak Peak at Death Cab for Cutie’s “Narrow Stairs”

Death Cab for Cutie have been working on their follow-up to “Plans” for a while now. The release date is fast approaching, but if you just can’t wait to hear what the album is all about, a scouring of YouTube leads to some samples from Ben Gibbard’s solo tour this year.

Here are the samples that I found.

Congratulations to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

Hey, remember when I posted that YouTube video of that song from that movie that I thought was so amazing and beautiful? Well, apparently there are a lot of people out there in the Academy that agreed with me that it was a beautiful song. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova accepted the Oscars last night and the acceptance speech was kind of funny.

When they first came out, Glen Hansard talked about some stuff and ended his speech with “Make art. Make art” as his battle cry and then the music piped in and the mic was cut off so Marketa Irglova couldn’t say anything. What was cut out of this clip is how John Stewart dead-panned to the audience and sarcastically said, “Man, THAT guy is SO arrogant” with mock disgust on his face.

Then apparently, for some reason, he decided to bring Marketa back out to give her portion of the acceptance speech. Check it out in this video and then check out the original video I posted of the amazing song, “Falling Slowly” that thankfully beat out all those crappy songs from Enchanted last night.

And Falling Slowly.

Ever Wanted to See A Triangle Solo?

The Foo Fighters played MSG in NYC for the first time in the history of the band. I wouldn’t have guessed that they hadn’t played there before. Anyway, the big performance of the night goes to Drew, the triangle player. If you get bored with Dave Grohl’s banter, you can fast forward a bit, but make sure you catch the triangle solo that Drew puts on for MSG.

Video – The Family Riot at The Grog Shop 2008-01-12

I went to check out some friends last night and I used my latest toy to record some video just for kicks. The sound and video quality are actually kind of cool. I used a Flip video camera that records an hour, plugs directly into my PC’s USB and creates AVI’s that are perfectly formatted for YouTube. And I think it was only $150.

Anyway, The Family Riot might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I like them. They play self-described “Experi-Metal Cartoon Core” so you have to at least respect the imagination as they build a sonic assault using keyboards, guitars, screamed vocals, two drum setups, one including a giant empty keg for instrumentation, a full set of marching band bells and four crazy sumbitches to beat the hell out of the stage.

Craig From the Company Line at Peabody’s

I will be playing a song at Peabody’s on Friday night with my old guitar teacher.

KB and the Riptides play their annual Christmas show and I have been asked to do a song with him.  I will be playing it without the rest of my band, The Company Line, and it would sure be nice to see some friendly faces out there when I am playing all by my lonesome.

So, it is all happening at Peabody’s Down Under in Cleveland on Friday December 21st.  The show starts at 7:00 PM and I have no idea what time I am going up there to play.

Hope to see some people out there then.  I will be doing one of the new tunes that The Company Line has been so hard at work on.

Fergie’s Version of Live and Let Die Makes Me Angry

Thank goodness for Youtube, because I don’t know that I would have wanted to miss out on this enraging performance that Fergie did of a marginally classic song. She gives physical shoutouts to Axl Rose’s version of the song with Guns N’ Roses. But what I found most enraging about this is how she says “Ya know ya did” after that part where the lyrics say “you used to say live and let live.” Just wait for it. It happens twice during the verse. See how angry it makes you.
