Where is the Cavs’ Offensive Coordinator?
I heard inklings at the end of the disastrous finals that the Cavs were considering hiring some kind of offensive specialist to help out Mike Brown. We all know he needs it in a serious way, as in cops who need bullets kind of way.
I understand the complexities with the salary cap that keep the Cavs from getting too much done in free agency and on the trade front, but someone tell me why they haven’t spent more of Dan Gilbert’s money on coaching when there is literally no limit to what a team can spend?
I haven’t been yelling and screaming about the relative inactivity up to this point, but we all know that the Cavs need to do something in this off-season to improve their chances next year. A lot of their players are in the upswings of their careers, so they should improve a little bit that way. But, I think that I speak for all of the Cavs’ fans out there when I say that the Cavs need to make a bigger improvement than just the progression of their young players.

Hey Bud,
I actually logged on to see if you had posted anything about the Quinn game, but I’ve been ranting a lot about the Cavs lately anyway, so this was a good post.
Here’s what drives me crazy. Everyone talks about how the Spurs are an incredible team. The Spurs are unbeatable. I agree. The Spurs are a great team because they PASS THE BALL AROUND THE PERIMETER WHILE LOOKING FOR AN OPEN LOOK.
Excuse me but didn’t every high school team in America used to do this? Why is it such a novel offensive scheme in the NBA? It’s in the movie “Hoosiers” for goodness sakes!
Mike Brown is worthless. I look at this cat and I see a guy who wants to be friends with his players. In fact, I think most high profile NBA coaches are narcissistic assholes. The only reason Popvich is a great NBA coach is because he wants to be A GREAT NBA COACH. Most of them (Fratello, Karl, Brown, Van Gundy, & Riley come to mind) are more interested in being great PERSONALITIES.
I’m sick of the NBA and I’m sick of seeing “the next Jordan” wasted on a coach who just wants to hang out in his player’s new “casino”.
About 20 years ago, I dragged Fiore to Cleveland Stadium more than once. We’d sit in centerfield bleach (empty for $5) and hang out with John “Boom Boom” Adams. He was very gracious and talked to us about baseball and the Indians. He asked what our favorite sports were. At the time, mine was baseball, Fiore’s was the NBA. Adams’ response to this was: “The NBA? They’ve got scripts for that shit!” After the ref scandal, who can disagree?
For most athletes, playing at a high level requires an apprenticeship of sorts. Minor league baseball. College football. Minor league hockey. Lower division soccer. In the NBA, this is a joke. Players can go straight from high school to the NBA. Stern changed the rules so that they couldn’t do this anymore, because he wants to keep players in college programs and away from his shoddy NBA superstar coaches!
I’d write more, but I’m very tired. I didn’t really plan on posting something this long, but I’m glad I did. I just hate to see a sport I love so much become roundly boring because lousy coaches are unable or unwilling to challenge their players.
Goodnight,
Battles
