Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself
February 21, 2005 · Filed Under Blog
- Hunter S. Thompson, the author who pioneered “gonzo” journalism and became an anti-establishment icon with his 1972 book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” fatally shot himself at his home outside Aspen, Colorado, Sunday night, police said. He was 67.
- In a statement released to the Aspen Daily News, Thompson’s son, Juan, confirmed that the writer had taken his own life.
- “On February 20, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head at his fortified compound in Woody Creek, Colorado. The family will provide more information … shortly,” the statement read. “Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family.”
I was never a huge fan of Thompson’s until I read some of the quirky sports articles he wrote for ESPN’s Page 2. It will be interesting to see what details unfold in terms of the reason for Thompson’s self-inflicted end. For whatever reason, it would surprise me if there wasn’t a substantial explanation.

His work for ESPN.com was good. Seriously though the way he wrote a narrative about such abstract things like partying with the Hells Angels, Hunting Bears at his compound in woody creek, or going on the campaign trail with Richard Nixon, was genius. He had a pretty great way of spinning a tale and making you feel like you were right at his side.
I honestly am pretty upset by this…I realize we aren’t talking about JD Salinger here, but I was truly a big fan of his work.
The worst thing is when there are no answers. I felt that need to know, unfulfilled when Elliott Smith apparently committed suicide, so I am hoping that in this case there is some sort of reasoning to it, even if it doesn’t matter to the evenutal outcome that Thompson is dead. It would be nice for the fans to understand for that little bit of closure.
Plus, we don’t want a whole crew of people thinking this is like Elvis or Jim Morrison and that Thompson is still alive.
Yeah, I would like to hear his “reasoning” behind it definitley. I do however know he was heavily under the influenece of numerous drugs, and although he was humorous, didn’t seem to have the most light hearted existence.
Pretty sad stuff man.
