Craig’s Friday Five 6-25-2004

1. Please ask your blog a trivia question or brain teaser.

Brain Teaser - A family lives in a big house with both boys and girls. Each child must have at least 4 brothers and 4 sisters. What is the least number of children that the family can have? (Please give me a number answer in the comments. Don’t explain yourself and I will give the answer later in the day.)

2. How many times (estimate) have you seen fireworks in your life? Do you like them?

Boy I am glad that I asked this question. I have probably seen fireworks about 20-25 times in my life. I thought they were really cool for a long time. I am now old and jaded because I honestly don’t care that much anymore. The last couple of times that we made our way down to the Esplanade while I was still living in Boston were painful experiences. A serious cluster-eff of people made it nearly impossible to enjoy something that looks the same everywhere you see them. Bah! Fireworks are for little kids and stoners.

3. What is the one hobby that you really enjoy but you prefer that nobody would know about?

Um, duh. It is probably this website. I mean I love this site and I love writing all the time, but sometimes you will be talking to someone who knows about your site and someone who previously did not know about your site will walk up and they will give you THAT look. You know the one that assumes they are now looking at a ki**ie p**n collector because they do something more than read email on the internet? A lot of my friends get and enjoy coming to read my site, but a lot still think it just makes me weird.

Or maybe collecting pickled body parts in jars is the hobby I don’t want anyone to know about. Ok, either the website, or the pickled body parts.

4. What do you use to keep yourself organized on a daily basis?

I have tried a variety of things in the past, but now I have finally found the best solution. I have a simple, notebook sized daily planner that has a month at a time. It has plenty of room to write notes. It is better than the I-Paq I was using, and it beats the hell out of the big bulky planner that I tried for a while.

5. What is the longest period of time that you haven’t been on a computer in the last year?

When I went to Vegas earlier this year, I didn’t take a computer with me. I think that was about 4 days or so? Honestly, I think that was the longest I have been without computer access for a REALLY long time. This is one of the things that makes me a loser I guess. I figure that this computer has let me keep in touch with a lot more people than I ever would have been able to keep up with before, so it is ok.

  2. mike on June 25th, 2004 10:33 am

    2 kids.

seen fireworks too many times to count & i grow more bored by them time after time. the only enjoyable thing about them now is watching my kids react. oh, and scary the shit out of them when the fireworks explode.

    kids…too busy for hobbies.

pda’s don’t work for me. i never keep anything updated. i just keep it all in my head & whatever i forget, oh well. if it was important enough someone will scream.

i can’t honestly think there has been an entire 24hr period where i could not access a computer. does my web-enable cellphone count?

    1. Please ask your blog a trivia question or brain teaser.

We know the speed of light, so what’s the speed of dark?

    2. How many times (estimate) have you seen fireworks in your life? Do you like them?
    35

    3. What is the one hobby that you really enjoy but you prefer that nobody would know about?

I honestly have no shame in anything I do, I can’t think of one.

    4. What do you use to keep yourself organized on a daily basis?

My Palm Zire 71 is my security blanket!!! I have the ability to organize my schedule, take digital photos, listen to mp3’s and play Spy Hunter!!

    5. What is the longest period of time that you haven’t been on a computer in the last year?

Probably also my trip to Vegas in September of last year

  4. Colombian Kid on June 25th, 2004 12:36 pm

    deezo feezo:
Dark is the absence of light, therefore, the speed of dark would have to be the same as the speed of light.

  5. deezo feezo on June 25th, 2004 12:51 pm

Ok, well how fast does light become absent?

  6. FilteringCraig on June 25th, 2004 1:33 pm

I have no idea, but Columbian Kid was right with my question. The answer is 10.

If you have 5 boys and 5 girls, that is the only way that EACH child can have AT LEAST 4 brothers and 4 sisters. With 5 and 5, each brother has 4 brothers and 4 sisters and each sister has 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Thanks for playing.

  7. Chris on June 25th, 2004 4:54 pm

The question states that the family in question lives with the children with all the brothers and sisters, not that the family includes them. Worded this way, it seems to me the correct answer should be zero.

  8. mike on June 25th, 2004 6:56 pm

in true lyndallian fashion, i am going to argue my point. the answer can be 10 or 2. i first thought ten if all the kids live at home. then i thought that maybe all the kids don’t live at home. maybe they are older & have their own kids. it only said there were both boys & girls in the house which meant at least one of each & they could have 4 sisters & 4 brothers living their own lives. that is all. i rest my case. if the glove don’t fit, you must acquit.

  9. FilteringCraig on June 26th, 2004 2:19 pm

Umm, sorry for the confusion. I was looking for 10. I was not trying to trick anyone on where the kids live. I said the family lives in the house, my bad for not being more clear. Most people automatically answer 9 thinking that gives 4 brothers and 4 sisters. The trick to this question was SUPPOSED to be the word EACH. If EACH child has 4 brothers and 4 sisters that makes 10 kids. Anyway, I guess I should have worded it better, but I was going from memory.

My apologies. Plus, maybe I am dense today, but I don’t understand your answer Chris. Feel free to give me some additional Cliff’s Notes or we can just forget it.

  10. Colombian Kid on June 26th, 2004 7:23 pm

    Deezo freezo:
Then light must become absent at the same speed is it comes to be, light does not change speed, whether it is coming, or going.

  11. Justin on June 28th, 2004 11:09 am

The question says “A family lives in a house with both boys and girls.” The question doesn’t say that these boys and girls are members of the family, just that they live in the same house with the family.

This is what Chris was getting at. He was being a smartassed killjoy. I should know. We can smell our own kind.

  12. Chris on June 28th, 2004 12:24 pm

I was being a smartass, but never let it be said I tried to kill the joy.

  13. FilteringCraig on June 28th, 2004 12:27 pm

Chris did you try to harsh my mellow?

I take no offense and I don’t assume for a second you guys didn’t know what I was saying. No more trivia I guess.

  14. colombian Kid on June 28th, 2004 10:02 pm

Dont mind others, a little trivia can be fun and entertaining at times, specially if you have nothing else to do.

  15. Justin on June 29th, 2004 10:26 am

Sorry, “killjoy” may have been a bit harsh. But “damperjoy” doesn’t have the same ring.

I want to know why those kids are living with the weird family in the big house.

    DEATH TO JOY

  16. Chris on June 29th, 2004 10:57 am

    Perhaps they’re the servants’ children.

  17. deezo feezo on June 29th, 2004 10:58 am

It does sound more like a Manson style Hippy commune! And we all know that any place with more than 2 hippies is bound to suck ass!
