Rape Invades the Real World?

It looks like this could be the craziest season of the Real World ever if it ever reaches the air.

SAN DIEGO, California (AP) — Police said Tuesday they are investigating a woman’s allegations that she was raped in the oceanfront home where MTV is filming the latest season of its “Real World” reality program.

The 22-year-old woman, who is not a cast member of the television show, said she believes she was assaulted while unconscious by a man who is also not a “Real World” cast or crew member.

Police served a search warrant on the house on November 18, seizing footage taped for the show along with bedding, towels and couch cushions.

Footage is recorded from 30 cameras mounted throughout the house in every area except the home’s two bathrooms, according to an MTV producer. A “Real World” cast member told the alleged victim she may have been sexually assaulted in one of the bathrooms, according to court documents.

Neither the police nor production company Bunim-Murray Productions would comment on the content of the videotapes seized by police. The network and production company said they were cooperating fully.

Police had not made any arrests in the case Tuesday.

The woman told investigators she went to a downtown nightclub November 14, where she met a man who was an acquaintance of one of the “Real World” cast members. The woman told police she consumed a drink offered by the man and then blacked out.

When she awoke the next morning, the woman said, she was fully clothed on a bed in a guest bedroom in the “Real World.”

The woman had pain in her genital area, and a medical examination performed the next day revealed cuts, according to court documents.

Police said a person whose name was not released said he found the woman lying naked on the bathroom floor, dressed her and moved her to a living room couch. With the help of a female cast member, the person moved the alleged victim to the guest bedroom.

MTV has aired 13 seasons of “Real World,” which documents the lives of seven strangers living together. “Real World San Diego” is still in production, according to MTV, and is scheduled to premiere in January.

If this girl got raped while unconcious in a bathroom, they better not show any of the season on MTV. To go after ratings that way, or worse yet, turn it into one of those self-serving episodes where they try to teach us something would be downright offensive.

Thanks Dan, that gave me a laugh. They were so close to rape in Vegas as it was, they might as well finish off the job. Did you see the Real Cancun?

I say show it. They’re supposed to be showing us what really happens when a bunch of people who don’t know each other live together and “stop being nice.” Well, it’s only a matter of time before some bad shit goes down, no? If they’re trying to show us reality television, show us the reality. Show us what happened.

I don’t mean show us footage of the assault or anything. But the cast reacting to the news that this happened, and them being questioned by police and such. And of course them eventually kicking out the guy who has the scumbag friend who did this, which they definitely will.

I seriously doubt they’ll scrap the season. I’m sure there will be a strangely disorienting episode where all the cast members mention they didn’t really know the guy and how it was really weird and traumatic for them all.

Yeah… there will be some weepy testimonials and hushed voices regretting what happened not because it happened but because of the net result. Vapid humans are usually prone to only react when the consequences come through. If they get away with it, its just another guilt-free, stupidity fueled day.

I definitely agree with Filtering Craig… I mean, this IS a reality television show! They should definitely show the episode where the cast members react to the raping incident. (Just their reaction to it, not the actual footage, of course!) I’m not sure if I necessarily agree with the whole kicking off of the cast member of whoever’s friend it was though… After all, it wasn’t THAT person’s fault! He/she couldn’t necessarily help it… they just have, as he said, SCUMBAG friends!!! Who does that?!?!?!? Bottom line is.. if the REAL WORLD can get away with showing almost next to nudity, gay/lesbian relationships, cast members with serious sicknesses/illnesses, cast members with serious problems such as alcoholism (like Ruthie from the Hawaii season) or other problems, cast members getting arrested such as people from this year’s season, etc…. then, I’m sure that they can very well get away with an episode in which someone has been an alleged rape victim….. it’s all part of REALITY… and isn’t that was this show is all about?!?!? What else did these people expect from knowing full-well that they were going to be on MTV??? It just comes with the package and I don’t thing there’s anything wrong with it… as long as they withhold the identity of the victim and the perpetrator……
