Johnny Depp: Oral Diarrhea - FilteringCraig

Johnny Depp: Oral Diarrhea

Johnny Depp has decided he doesn’t like the United States. He has the right to say that, as a U.S. citizen from anywhere within this country, but he decided to snipe at his former home while hiding and cowering in the south of France, a country that is historically known for hiding, cowering and waving white flags. Kind of ironic really. Maybe he is right though. Do you think this commentary will affect his box office totals for his next movie? Probably not, so maybe we are dumb.

At least he did the right thing and left the country. I hope this ingrate doesn’t come back. I don’t think the U.S. is always right or infallible, but I am willing to “Stand beside her, and guide her” if you know what I mean.

(From CNN.COM)

Hollywood star Johnny Depp said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the “Pirates of the Caribbean,” told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, and their two children.

“America is dumb, it’s like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive,” he said.

“My daughter is four, my boy is one. I’d like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out,” said the star of the off-beat films “Edward Scissorhands” and “Dead Man.”

Depp slammed George W. Bush’s administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

“I was ecstatic they re-named ‘French Fries’ as ‘Freedom Fries’. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots,” he told Stern.

  • jarataur

Let’s start with your comments, then we will get to Mr. Depp’s.

“France, a country that is historically known for hiding, cowering and waving white flags.” WTF?? What proof can you offer of this? Let’s see… America’s war of independence… no, they saved our asses there…. Oh… the war of 1812… no, if it hadn’t been for their war with England, the fledgling US wouldn’t have had time to prepare for the war. Let’s see, WWI, no, they fought for the freedom of Europe then. Oh, I know, WWII. Oh no, they actually had a most effective underground that helped save the lives of 100s of American and British pilots. So where is your proof? Cough it up. Probably right near the weapons of mass destruction. This is the type of jingoistic Americanism that Depp is talking about. Jump on board! Let’s call people names and throw rocks at them. They are different… they want peace. WE WILL CRUSH THEM.

You say he is hiding. It doesn’t sound like he is hiding. Giving interviews and indicating generally where you are living is not really hiding. And, he has a right to say it from ANYWHERE. Freedom of thought and voice are not dependent on location.

So Mr. Depp. He does have the right to say what he says. In fact, it is a good thing. We NEED people to force us to look at ourselves and question what we do see and DON’T see (as maybe we are blinded by something). I don’t give a rat’s ass if he changes one person’s opinion. But if he can make one person think about what is going on and why, that is a good thing. Will he? I don’t know.

I happen to agree with his statement on “freedom” fries. I have never seen so many idiots jump on board something SO stupid so quickly.

  • FilteringCraig

You know what, I think you missed the biggest point. The last line is what I feel most strongly about. You can disagree all you want, but it is not only cowardly, but fucking infuriating that someone would jump ship on this place that, while flawed, has been great to me for 24 years. If you think the ship is sinking, don’t throw gasoline on the fire from another boat. Try and help bail it out. So while I was using some cliched rhetoric about the French there is absolutely no fucking excuse to abandon a place that gives you the opportunity to have influence.

He went about this all wrong. If he feels strongly enough to hurl shit, he should be here to offer suggestions.

Sorry, I am fired up about this one.

It’s like the people who say, “Well, I didn’t want this war, so all you hawks can pay my taxes until it ends.” That pisses me off too. Regardless of the decisions that are being made, we are all citizens of the same country and we can work to improve it through debate and voting. Disassociating yourself isn’t the answer, it is an additional contribution to the problem.

  • FilteringCraig

By the way, I also agree about the “freedom fries” but I am not moving to France.

  • Heather

    Holy shit. He’s 40?

And anyone can run to another country and bitch about it. He didn’t have any qualms living here for the first 30-odd years of his life, now, did he?

France can have him, and his movie based on a theme park ride.

  • Chris

Aw, c’mon Craig. Imagine for a second…Craig and the Craigtones hit it big, and a bigtime Hollywood director notices you prancing in a video and puts you in a movie. Your co-star is some ridiculously hot French chick and before you know it, she’s having your babies and you’re living in Aix-en-Provence. Then one day you’re out buying some USAF Tomahawk bread and the next thing you know, some German reporter jackass has a mike in your face. One thing leads to another and pretty soon bloggers in Cleveland are ripping you a new one. It’s a slippery slope.

  • FilteringCraig

I love Johnny Depp as an actor and I see your point Chris, but I am sorry, this just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe you are right and a hot French actress would rub me a different way and I would do the same thing. Feel free to kill me on your site when that happens. Until then, I will criticize those who abandon a place that is better than any other in the world at allowing it’s citizens to enact change.

  • Mike

craig, you say he’s a coward for moving to another country & ripping on the u.s. that he should have stayed here & help ‘bail out the ship’. didn’t you post something not long ago about celebrities expressing their political views in this country? weren’t you against it? so which is it? should eddie scissorhands stay in france & talk smack or come back here & talk smack? either way, doesn’t seem like you want anyone talking smack if they don’t agree w/you.

  • FilteringCraig

It’s true. I would prefer celebrities who have nothing to do with politics not say anything at all, but in this case I would rather he not throw stones from afar. In either case I AGREE with him that this country is wrong on a lot of things. I said above that I don’t think it is “infallible” but I can’t handle deserters like him and the people who say they shouldn’t have to pay their taxes because they didn’t vote for the war. Remember I didn’t want to go to war either. But we did. Am I going to leave? No. Am I going to threaten to not pay my taxes? No. I will do the best I can by writing on my tiny little space here and try and make an educated decision in the next election.

  • Justin

To me, it doesn’t really matter from where Mr. Depp asserts his opinions. If he’s standing on top of the Eiffel Tower, that’s fine with me. Likewise, if he’s standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, that’s fine too. I don’t see it like he’s hiding in France from whatever backlash might come from this comment.

What is interesting to me is why anyone should care about anything Johnny Depp has to say about, well, anything. If he doesn’t like America, and he’s left and moved to France, what are we talking about here? Isn’t this a closed case? Is anyone heartbroken that we’ve lost Johnny Depp’s support? Have we lost some national treasure because he’s left for Europe? How is this news at home or anywhere else? Why does this German magazine care?

Maybe I’ll send them my views on the electoral college and the role of state’s rights in the federal government. I’m pretty sure my opinion of America is as valuable as Mr. Depp’s, if not moreso.

  • Blogcritics

    Johnny Depp: Oral Diarrhea

Johnny Depp has decided he doesn’t like the United States. He has the right to say that, as a U.S.

  • jarataur

Henry David Thoreau was imprisoned for refusing to pay taxes in support of that war [the first war against Mexico]. Ralph Waldo Emerson gathered a fund to pay for his (Thoreau’s) release, and when he entered the jail asked “Henry! What are you doing in there?” whereas Thoreau replied “What are you doing out there?”

Now that’s the tax defying shiznit the country was founded on! Oh, did I mention the Tea Party. Yea, there was this little thing in Boston. Bunch of people protesting the status quo.

So, France is not full of a bunch of surrendering people… not paying your taxes in protest IS patriotic… “actors” and actors can say whatever they want about politics whenever they want to – even the dumb ones.

But let’s take this last issue a step further. Can a director make a political statement with his art? How about an artist who works with oil and canvas? I think we would all agree that they can and do this. It is even a common practice. But why when they open their mouths is it offensive? If they use their art, no problem, but if they say it you don’t like it. I recommend “Smothered” the story of the Smothers Brothers and the battles they had to fight with censorship. Very awesome DVD.

  • FilteringCraig

I don’t agree that not paying taxes is patriotic despite your examples. There are other ways to exact social change like voting and speaking which are guaranteed by the constitution. Is that not good enough for you?

As far as directors and artists making statements, that is true and I don’t have a problem with that. When Johnny Depp who is basically just an actor who performs other people’s statements tries to just tell me because he is famous, I get a little upset. (in all fairness he wrote and directed a single movie in 1997, but that is certainly not what he is known for) I don’t remember my post about celebrities speaking out, but I do remember criticizing Fred Durst for making a comment at the Grammys or something.

Anyway, when an artist makes a statement with art or a director makes a statement with a movie, you can assume a certain level of research and understanding as they convey a message. When Johnny Depp comes out of nowhere on the heels of a movie based on a theme-park ride, it pisses me off. Sorry. It just does.

  • Justin

I don’t know about this whole refusing to pay taxes thing. Unless you forfeit the right to have your trash collected, your children schooled, your roads paved and your home protected by the police, you need to pay your taxes. Find some other way to protest.

Military expenditures are an absurdly high percentage of our total budget, but they’re not the only thing taxpayers are paying for.

And I’m all for symbolic disobedience of unfair laws. But taxes are a bad choice. We’re feeding hungry children and paying for medication for old people with tax dollars.

Of course Mr. Depp is welcome to say whatever he wants about America wherever he’s living. I’m more annoyed that it’s being reported as though it is news that has value to someone somewhere. Though he’s certainly entitled to it, his opinion is meaningless.

I can see where Craig’s coming from, though. When Michael Moore runs off at the mouth, or Tim Robbins, or Barbara Streisand, at least you get the feeling that they’re trying to change minds. They’re trying to accomplish something. They’re being constructive. Johnny Depp wasn’t.

Again, I’ve got to keep coming back to the fact that I could not possibly care less what these famous people have to say. The concept of listening to rich and/or famous people as though their opinions mean anymore than anyone else’s is ridiculous, as Arnold is proving out in Cali with his Stealth Candidacy of Issue Avoidance.

  • jarataur

    Well, here is Mr. Jefferson:
“When patience has begotten false estimates of its motives, when wrongs are pressed because it is believed they will be borne, resistance becomes morality.”

I see that as a statement not for the state, but for the freedom of Man and his right to exersize his protest. “Wrongs are pressed because it is believed they will be borne.” In my life I have never known a time when that is more true. And people are just letting it happen. Why? Well:

“War… is the moment when the energy of a single hand shows itself in the most seducing form.”

    and, more importantly

“Habituated from their infancy to passive submission of body and mind to their kings and priests, they are not qualified when called on to think and provide for themselves; and their inexperience, their ignorance and bigotry make them instruments often in the hands of the Bonapartes and Iturbides to defeat their own rights and purposes.”

Am I going to stop paying my taxes? No. I can’t exactly go to my human resources office and demand my ENTIRE paycheck. I could change my witholdings so I get most of it back and then not pay the difference. Of course Ashcroft will have his cronies on my door pronouncing me a terrorist in 5 seconds. Especially with these terrorist-like postings. Hell, I own “Dead Man”, clearly a terrorist inspired movie.

So what do we do when things get SO bad they begin to dig into the foundations we believe in? What if they seem to be determined to undermine my protests? Justin, you are right, I will pay my taxes to help the programs I know are trying to help. Unfortunately some of that money is being spent trying to kill my cousins in Iraq.

You are right Justin that we shouldn’t care what Mr. Depp says, or at least that is should not be news. What is the motivation of the magazine? To root out Depp’s terrorist ties? To warn people about Depp’s movies. Maybe sell magazines? And the world will buy them (see quote #3 above).

    Sorry about the long post.

  • Jen

At the very least Johnny Depp’s comment has prompted thought on the issue. While we don’t have to agree with him, we certainly don’t need to discredit him based on his past movie choices. I’m sure that most of you would be willing if not eager to have your opinions published if anyone would report them. The bigger question is when/why CNN started reporting gossip instead of news.

  • Chris

Most tax resisters aren’t getting away with anything. If you have the money or assets, the Feds come get it, with penalties and interest. It’s more a question of conscience.

  • Justin

“While we don’t have to agree with him, we certainly don’t need to discredit him based on his past movie choices. I’m sure that most of you would be willing if not eager to have your opinions published if anyone would report them.”

This has given me an idea. Johnny Depp needs a weblog. Problem solved.

  • FilteringCraig

Yeah… I am proof enough that people will read absolutely ANYTHING anyway! 🙂

  • Allison

i think Johnny Depp can say what ever he damn well pleases, and you people have no write to get involved. Truthfully, i wouldn’t want my children involved in a war either, so I understan what he is saying. No one ever said the people needed to get involved. Most people don’t even like the proesident. If I was in his position, I’d do the same thing. Don’t eventry to fucking say we should be warned by his movies, you fucking people are crazy.THIER FUCKING MOVIES!!! HE WAS IN A FUCKING DISNEY MOVIE.. You all need to truely consider what you god damn say about him. That’s his life, his choice, and I agree with him, expecially when people like you sit thier an converse about it.

  • allison

And he opologized ………..”My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent.”

  • Doyle Brunson

“…you people have no write to get involved.”

But we ARE involved, Allison, and it’s too late to turn back the hands of time. Once the implacable forces of Filtering Craig comments are wakened from their millenia of dormancy and unleashed from their subterranean lair, NOTHING can disentangle them from the issues at which they are directed. It will be years before Johnny Depp and the commenters of Filtering Craig will be able to spend even a few moments without thinking about each other.

  • MojoMark

She’ll never understand that “Doyle”. In fact, I’m not sure I did. But for her sake, let’s keep the reading level closer to 3rd grade so all can participate in this important discussion of a former American who wisely decided to live, of all places, in France.

  • swimmerchik

first of all, he can say whatever he wants to about the u.s. most people feel that way anyways, just he isn’t too afraid to say it. come on, you know that you are just a little bit embarrassed to say you are american with the whole iraq thing going on. also, i believe that, as he stated, he only meant to criticize bush’s policies and the iraq war, not what america stands for (freedom of SPEECH, etc.) but, that isn’t the point. whatever he says, that is his opinion, and it isn’t completely untrue either. he can say whatever he thinks–they call it the first amendment. isnt it our duty as americans to question our leadership and stand up for what we believe in? if he dislikes bush, well, he isnt alone. just because he isnt some dumbass patriot who believes every piece of propaganda our government and media spoonfeeds us, well, you get my point. he may or may not have said those things. if he did, thats ok cuz its his opinion, and i for one agrre with him.

  • allison

thank you swimmerchik. I guess some people are smart enough to question things before doing what society WANTS us to do, whhich is agree with America. But Johnny Depp, basicaly is the only one who had the balls to say it fro all the people who thought it.

  • FilteringCraig

Tsk tsk tsk. You can’t pull the first amendment bullshit here, because nobody’s buying it. The first amendment says the GOVERNMENT can make no law to take away rights to speech. Last time I checked I don’t work for the government so me criticizing and not liking what Johnny Depp is just a case of my taking him on with my own first amendment rights. Please have a clue before stopping here.

  • Allison

I never said you couldn’t say what you did. I’m just saying I don’t agree.

  • FilteringCraig

Allison, you said “i think Johnny Depp can say what ever he damn well pleases, and you people have no write to get involved.”

You said I have no right to get involved. You are trying to tell me what I can and cannot say. Is this a violation of my first amendment rights? Absolutely not, unless you are in a position to pass a law limiting my speech.

  • Allison

No, I meant that we shouldn’t get involved with his LIFE not in what he is saying. you need to understand that I have a way of talking that no one really understands. Yeah, you can THINK what you want about him, But you shouldn’t try to talk about him and change HIS rights. And he has a right to say what ever he wants.

  • swimmerchik

i have several points to make on this topic:

1))) The reason johnny initially moved to france was to live with the mother of his children. he found that he liked the political climate there better and as a MOVIE STAR it was nicer because the paparazzi there don’t care as much about him.

2))) His statements were translated from English to German and back again which could make the wording slightly harsher than intended.

3))) Don’t tell me that the media has never twisted or exagerrated the words of someone famous to sell copies.

4))) His words were not directed at America as a whole, but at the government and current foreign policy. He cleared up any confusion about this in a statement the next day. While some saw this as backpedalling, it was actually a clarification. “I am an American and love my country…it is for this reason i speak candidly and sometimes criticall about it” With some actors, this would seem phony and scripted. From depp though, who doesn’t care at all what you think, i am inclined to believe him.

5)))I have heard many people say on this topic, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.” At first, this may seem reasonable. However, at close examination, this attitude is that of a potential dictatorship. You see, Johnny Depp is not the only one who has benefited from the wealth and freedom of America. While not on the same scale as that of a celebrity, everyone of us has, to some extent, benefited from our country’s basic principles. That being said, all of us average working class citizens (Who have tvs and computers and cars thanks to America)are also bitng the hand that feeds us if we don’t like Bush? Should anyone who does not like our presdient, whether they be a plumber or a celebrity, be deported and shunned? Should every American just keep their mouth shut about their political views and be thankful they don’t live in Rwanda? OF COURSE NOT!! So, who is the real hypocrite here???

6))) Depp only said that he will not live here until the political climate changes.

7))) I know that an entertainer’s opinion is no better than ours, but it’s no worse either! Also, Depp wasn’t trying to tell the whole world he was right. he was asked a question and he answered. What was he supposed to say? “No comment. I have too much money to ever have a valid opinion!”

8))) To add to my above comment, it seems that an entertainer is only stupid and uneducated if they disagree with Dubya. Britney Spears recently said that “we should all go along with our president no matter what he does and just have faith in him”. Talk about uneducated!!! She doesn’t even have an opinion, just listens to whatever Bush says and follows suit. HMMMM…maybe that dumb puppy comment had a bit of truth to it!

9))) Johnny Depp is an amzing actor- arguably the best of his generation, and i will continue to enjoy his rare talent both in the theater and on DVD/VHS.

I am open to your views and do mean to offend anyone with my comments. Please respond to this post and tell me what you think on the issue!

  • allison

I agree completely and I noticed no one ever disagreed. I can’t wait till filter craig reads this. You are a wonderful person with a loud oppinion, and I stand behind you.
